Hello Jetstar

TOUCHING DOWN: A Jetstar Q300 aeroplane, one of five bought by the airline to service regional centres, including Nelson from this December. Photo: Mark Tantrum. Andrew Board The $9 fares might be a gimmick, but Jetstar says its cheap fares are here to stay. Jetstar announced yesterday that Nelson was one of four regional centres that it would be flying to as part of an expansion

of regional routes. Jetstar says a flight to Auckland will cost $49 one way and to fly to Wellington will cost just $45. Head of Jetstar New Zealand, Grant Kerr, says he was smiling “ear to ear” after the announcement at Wellington airport, and he told Nelson Weekly that it will be great

news for Nelson. “We know we can grow the region from the tourism perspective and get more Nelsonians flying. We’re here for the long haul and we’re excited.” Jetstar is the third airline to confirm it will start flying to Nelson this year, but unlike

Kiwi Regional Airlines and Originair, it will compete directly against existing carrier Air New Zealand. Jetstar says it will mean much lower prices for Nelson air travellers and the news was

“Yes, it’s fantastic. It’s good to have the competition. I think it’s just what we need.”

“It will be really good to have more options - it will make it easier for people to travel between the North and South Islands.”

“It’s great - anything to give Air New Zealand a run for their money.”

“It’s going to be good. It’s good to see prices going down and people will have a better variety of flights to choose from.”

Jetstar will start flying to Nelson this summer as prizes. “We’re so ex cited about this. We saw the positive reaction from people on social media and the number of positive responses from people in local newspapers. I think there is a place for two strong regional airlines in New Zealand and I can say that we are here for the long haul.”

FROM PAGE 1 met with jubilation from air passengers spoken to by Nelson Weekly at Nelson Airport yesterday [see Street Talk on page 2]. Politicians have also welcomed the news. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says the airline will have a “significant economic benefit” for the region. “We saw our residents really get in behind the campaign to bring Jetstar to our city, and so there will be a lot of people celebrating this news today.” Nelson MP Nick Smith says the announcement is an “exciting step in our region’s future.” “This is a great vote of confidence in Nelson and good news for residents and businesses. The tourism industry has had a more difficult time since the global financial crisis, and the expense of air transport in and out of Nel-

The Nelson to Wellington service will start on February 1 and will see 21 flights between the two cities each week. Nelson is the only centre that has

two destinations as part of the announcement. Grant says Jetstar will celebrate the announcement with a special free breakfast at Nelson’s 1903 Square [under the Church Steps] on Wednesday morning and encourages people to come along. The breakfast runs from 7 to 9am tomorrow and they will be giving away Jetstar merchandise packs

Editor’s note: Nelson Weekly has long-backed Jetstar’s entry into the market in Nelson. We feel this is one the most significant events in Nelson for several decades. For sports teams, businesspeople, those travelling to family events and, of course, people going on holiday, this news will be a welcome relief. It will also open up our region to more visitors, which is fantastic for our local economy. We at the Weekly are proud to have played a role in voicing the concerns of Nelson air travellers and encouraging Jetstar into our skies.

Mapua crash: The first person on the scene of last night’s horrific car crash near Mapua is praising the actions of everyone who helped out, including a man who probably saved the life of one of the drivers. Nelson’s Vincent Dickie and his partner Pania were driving on the Ruby Bay By-Pass near the turn-off to Mapua at around 5pm on Thursday, when two cars collided directly in front of their car. Vincent says one of the cars involved in the crash flipped and caught fire, but fortunately a passerby had a fire extinguisher and raced over and put the fire out. Vincent says the man’s actions were a life saver and soon there were about 20 people helping out.

Young builder wins top apprentice award The Top of the South’s top building apprentice, Shaun Campbell, reckons he has learned from the best in the business. But then he would say that because Shaun, who was named the Upper South Island Region’s Registered Master Builders Carters Apprentice of the Year in Nelson on Saturday, works for his father Russell. Shaun, aged 20, trained through Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation and works for his father’s home building company Inhaus Developments. “I’ve always enjoyed helping dad out so I suppose being a builder was meant to be,” Shaun says. “I picked up my first plastic toy hammer when I was two or three and have been building things ever since.” However, both Russell and Shaun admit that being boss and worker as well as father and son “has had its moments” “It can be testing but we usually work really well together,” Russell says. “Shaun is a good builder and shows a lot of attention to detail he’s also very good with our clients.” Shaun, who attended Garin College, agrees that building a good relationship with clients is almost important as building a good house.

Top apprentice Shaun Campbell with his father Russell at work on Monday. “Over the past year I have had to develop my communication skills to deal with both clients and subcontractors. The thing I love the most about building is seeing the smile on a client’s face after a finished project completed to a high standard.” The judges rated Shaun highly for his competence in his knowledge of the industry, and in the way he managed his project submission. Shaun was awarded a range of products and tools, $2000 to spend at Carters, and a spot at an Outward Bound Course. Second place was awarded to Zac Forbes, 26, from Nelson and employed by Craig Finnie Building. Shaun will now compete against the winners from the other nine regions at the national competition in Auckland, on October 8-9.

The Nelson Fire Service was a called to help a lady get her cat out of a tree last month – in England. Station officer Craig Davies says he received the call on a quiet afternoon from a lady asking if they could come and help get her cat down. It’s not a totally uncommon request and Craig says they agreed to come and help. The only problem was getting there. “At first she said Halifax and I thought ‘ok, on Halifax St’. But then she kept saying some other place that she said was a suburb and I had no idea what she was talking about,” says Craig. As he was on the phone, fellow fire fighter Rob Millener was searching on the nearby computer to try and figure out where the lady was. He realised she was giving the right address, it was just in another country. “Rob kept saying to me ‘she’s in England, the address is in England’. “I thought, ‘nah, she can’t be’ but when I asked what country she was in she said England, and I said ‘I’m

sorry, you’ve called Nelson, New Zealand.’” The lady immediately hung up the phone, says Craig. “I don’t know if she felt embarrassed or Craig Davies. realised it was probably costing her a bit of money so hung up, but it was quite funny.” Craig says they do occasionally get requests to get cats out of trees. “If we’re not busy it is something we will do and we were ready to go on this occasion until we pieced it all together. We might have been driving around for a wee while.” He says the lady must have searched Nelson Fire Service on in the internet and saw the New Zealand brigade first. “I don’t know how she dialled us though, surely she didn’t dial the country code and area code. I’d hope she would have realised something was amiss if she had to do that.”

Parents go to war for school production Kate Russell

Parents and teachers of Nayand Primary School are gearing up for their annual fundraiser show, which is now in it’s seventh year. This year’s show is called ‘Tour of Duty’ and will feature 35 parents and teachers, which principal Janice Gulbransen says is the biggest cast they’ve ever had. The school is aiming to fundraise $25,000 from the show to go towards finishing the landscaping around their new multi-purpose centre. All the fundraising from previous shows has gone towards building the centre itself. Janice says its nice to do a fundraiser that’s different from other schools. “It’s just fun,” she says. “Its a really great way of meeting parents, and it’s about building our community.” The cabaret style show is about a ‘culinary war’ which is about to explode, and will feature 27 songs that tell a story of culinary episodes. Janice says people can expect lots of laughs, colourful and exotic costumes, traditional army gear and pre and post war memories. “It’s just a fun night out – you can laugh, relax, and enjoy parents putting themselves out there to support the school, because that’s what its about,” she says.

Lego competition attracts 300 entries A model of the Star Wars spaceship Millennium Falcon, with 5195 pieces and costing over $13,000, will be just one of "stunning sets" on display at the inaugural Brickwater Lego Exhibition and Competition in Nelson. Initially, Brickwater was just going to be a low-key event for kids to raise funds for the Nelson Shoshin Kendo Club. However, Brickwater generated so much interest from Lego-maniacs that it has grown into a monster, already attracting "300 to 400" entries from around the country. "We just wanted to organise a fundraiser for our son Lachlan's Kendo Club," one of the organisers, Paul Hunt, says. "He's also keen on Lego so we decided to mix the two and run a Lego competition for the kids. "But once we started talking about it, all the adult collectors got involved and it started to grow. We had one guy in Dunedin get in touch with us and say he was coming with his model of an entire city - he's going to need three extra bags to bring it up to Nelson. "We also needed more space. We'd booked the Brightwater School Hall for it but now we also need to use the library and some of the classrooms." Paul says some of the models that will be on display are "phenomenal" and are "almost art"

Although there will be some seriously expensive sets on display at Brickwater, Paul says there will also be plenty of entertainment for Lego fans of all ages and abilities. There will be a Lego competition just for children, a table full of Lego blocks for people to play with, a Lego-themed

colouring-in competition, a race track designed for Lego cars and a Lego shop set up by Toy Zone. There will also a be a raffle for a Lego Mini Cooper. Brickwater will be held at Brightwater School on Sunday September 13 from 10am to 4pm. Entry costs $2. For more information, go to the website shoshinkendo.nz/brickwater

The South Island has vast tracts of some of the most intact, undisturbed natural areas left on our planet— these last truly wild places deliver beauty and isolation in spades, but it is the allure of giant trout in crystal clear water that draws anglers from around the globe to this treasured land. For many, RISE Fly Fishing Film Festival has become so much more than just going to the cinema. These annual fish-fests have become a true celebration of fly fishing, it’s an excuse to get together with friends and reminisce about the past season, as well as look forward to the season to come. The film will play at State Cinema on Monday, September 7, from 8.30pm. Tickets are available from State Cinema. Nelson Weekly has two double passes to give away to the film. To win, simply email editorial@ nelsonweekly.co.nz with your name and a contact phone number and you’ll be in the draw.

Prep team wins Mathix competition Four prep students have dominated the annual Mathix competition, finishing the 20 questions in half of the allocated time. The Nelson College prep team competed against around 20 other teams from schools across the Top of the South. Each team had 30 minutes to answer the 20 questions. The first team to complete the questions successfully, won. Teacher Richard Nott says the boys were put through their paces before the event with training sessions and a mock competition. “What set this team apart was teamwork.” Competitor Ronan Thompson, 13, says they were Nelson College prep students An Ngueyn and Ronan Thompson, happy to win and while the questions were tough, he both 13, were two of the winning Mathix team. Absent are Euan admitted they weren’t troubled too much. “It wasn’t Fenwick and Maxwell Busby. that hard, really.”

V8 cruise for Father’s Day

The V8 Escape Father’s Day Cruise will be an opportunity for owners of big American cars, hotrods or classic sports cars to get their motors running and raise funds for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter. Sunday’s charity cruise will start with a coffee, scones and “a natter” at Brightwater Motor Inn at 9am, before leaving on a mystery route to the Riwaka Resurgence at 10.30am. Organiser Ross Hurley says people can bring lunch and refreshments for a picnic at the Riwaka Resurgence, with the event concluding at about 2.30pm. “We wanted to finish reasonably early so that Ross Hurley and his Chevrolet Impala he will be driving in the charity V8 people can get back to Richmond or Nelson Escape Father’s Day Cruise on Sunday September 6. Light Nelson will be back

Light Nelson, the city’s winter light festival, is back in business and looking to be better and brighter than before, from July 8-12 next year. After huge growth in its second year last year, the event took a break to regroup and increase its funding base. “We really were overwhelmed with the huge success of the event last year,” says Light Nelson Trust chair Brian Riley. “The positive side was having the ‘runs on the board’ to secure funding from the Nelson City Council and the Canterbury Community Trust. In July next year, Light Nelson will still be based at the Queen’s Gardens, but will cater to the crowds by extending more into the NMIT campus and the immediate surrounds. All applications must be in by 5pm, November 30 this year. More information at lightnelson. org.nz

families,” Ross says. There will be an entry fee of $5 for the September 6 event with all proceeds going to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, and spot prizes donated by car-related businesses. Passengers can also donate $3 each to be included in the prize draws. Ross will be taking his 1961 Chevrolet Impala Bubble Top on the cruise which has already attracted at least another 20 entries. “We already have at least 20 coming, but we want to get as many as possible so that we can make a decent donation to a very good cause,” Ross says. Supporting new airlines: Supporting the new airlines coming to Nelson is not just about Air NZ slashing the fares to the main centres of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch because of the competition. It's more about giving us direct access to other regional airports without having to go through Wellington or Christchurch. The new airlines will potentially give us access to fly direct to places like Palmerston North, Hamilton (both ex Air NZ routes) and Dunedin, while adding more competition to the main centres. Bring it on!!! Rosie Grant. Are you happy to see Lewis Stanton back on the street? He honestly doesn't bother me. Nelson's not the only place that have people like him, they are found throughout NZ and the world. Leave him be and stop feeding him with attention and publicity. Hope Rogers.

Nelson needs a colourful character like Hone. If the council and objectors weren't so tunnelled-visioned, they would see how Hone and Barney would provide a great attraction for the almost-boring town. Peter Banham.

Shame, the intolerant side of Nelson shows its true self... go Hone. Anne FitzSimon. As a shop owner in the arcade, at first I had no real opinion, but more and more guys coming up to get haircuts say that their wives or girlfriends or children avoid him by walking on the other side of the street, so he does affect our businesses. I'm all for his right to protest anytime, but really think he should have to abide by the same rules that the buskers do by limiting his time in one space and changing it up a bit. His space gets bigger and bigger and I honestly don't see what he expects to get out of this constant occupation. Personally, I'm tired of his stubborn stance, and feel sad that he's wasting so much time (and taxpayer expense) with this useless protest. Shawn Stormann. I wonder what his protesting this way is achieving for him that supports the stance he is taking. I support him to have the right to live his life as he chooses. I do wonder how effective this is for him, as it polarises people, but I support his right to protest

when Glen approached me I thought it would be good to provide something for other kids who have an interest in it as well,” he says. Glen says he wanted a tool shed because the trolley that the tools were kept on before wasn’t ideal, considering how often they were used. “It fits right in. We struggle to keep enough wood to keep them busy, they love it.” Jason Gardiner Builders built the shed and Placemakers Nelson filled it with tools for the kids.

A local construction firm is helping to encourage the next generation of builders by supplying a tool shed at Bridge St Early Learning Centre. Jason Gardiner owns a building company of the same name, and says he was approached by centre manager Glen Hersey to see if he could supply a tool shed for some of the kids. “My son goes here and he’s like a minime at home, he’s always helping me out building and playing with tools, so

Locals prepare for Merchant Navy Day

A special celebration will mark this year’s Merchant Navy Day in Nelson, with a new plaque to be unveiled at Sunderland Pier. Merchant Navy Day is this Thursday, with the annual service at Anzac Park to be held on Saturday, September 5. The plaque will be unveiled at the Neptune Memorial at Sunderland Pier and will commemorate the seafarers of Port Nelson. From the earliest years of Nelson until the 1970s, one of the major locally-owned industries was merchant shipping. Port Nelson was the base for many shipping companies and associated businesses. For much of the twentieth century the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Company was the biggest employer in Nelson. In those days, many young Nelson men went to sea to earn their living, serving in the scows, colliers and other coastal ships which carried goods between ports around New Zealand, or in larger foreign-going vessels, says Merchant Navy Association Nelson secretary Ben Gibbs. “Merchant seamen from Nelson also played a crucial part in both world wars. At the outbreak of the second world war the Royal Navy was in desperate need of auxiliary ships and of experienced seamen to operate them.” Merchant ships were often requisitioned for military purposes such as mine-sweeping, and their crews were made subject to naval military discipline (under what were known as T124 articles), in some cases for the duration of the war. The majority of seafarers continued serving in coasters carrying goods between New Zealand ports. Others served in cargo ships transporting vital food supplies to Britain or fuel and military equipment to the theatres of war, as well as in hospital ships, troop-carriers and oil tankers. The unveiling of the plaque will be held at 2.30pm on Thursday, with the Merchant Navy Day Service at Anzac Park at 11am on Saturday.

Everybody enjoys being out on the water in the summertime, whether its catching a few fish, waterskiing or heading off down the sounds for the weekend, but there a few safety tips you should follow. Here are the top 10 tips for a safe summer on the water: 1. Wear a lifejacket. 2. Carry two forms of communication. 3. Check the weather forecasts, tides and swell. 4. Let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back. 5. Carry enough fuel for your trip and some in reserve. 6. Take safety equipment, including a first aid kit, spare rope, a second form of propulsion, and a bailer. 7. Switch on navigation lights from dusk ‘til dawn. 8. Have an observer when towing – it takes three to ski. 9. Keep to 5 knots (9 kph or a fast walking pace) within 50 metres of another vessel or swimmer and 200 metres off the shore. 10. Make sure the bung is in before you launch.

Free casting clinic for trout fishermen

FLY FISHING: Nelson Trout Fishing Club's, from left, Maree Peterson, Fred Frahm, Ray Day and Brian Richards will be helping out at the club's fly casting clinic at Garin College this Sunday. People are encouraged to come along to the free clinic and begin to learn the art of fly fishing from the best. Photo: Simon Bloomberg.

Simon Bloomberg Anyone who is interested in finding out how to fly fish can take the first steps to learning the art at the Nelson Trout Fishing Club's free fly casting clinic at Garin College this Sunday. But the club's first female president, Maree Peterson, warns it won't be easy. Fly fishing is a much harder than the more popular spin-fishing and Maree says it can take years to master the skill. "It's not easy," Maree, who has been fly fishing for just three years, says. "You lose a lot of flies and get a lot of tangles before you get it right." And as club member Ray Day explains, it can be hazardous as well as challenging. "The first time I went fly fishing I went out with an expert and caught my first fish straight away. I thought then that it was easy, but it wasn't - it took me another five years to catch my next one. "But I did catch the trees behind and I even caught my own ear. It's not easy at the start." However, all the club members agree that the benefits of learning to fly fish are worth all the effort because it opens up a whole new world of angling. He says there's nothing better than walking alongside a river and seeing a trout rising to the surface to feed, and then casting a fly to it and catching it. "Fly fishing isn't easy to learn and it has some limitations, but it's also a lot of fun. It's a different type of fishing altogether," Fred says. Anyone is welcome to attend the fly casting clinic that will be held on the back sports field at Garin from 9am to midday on Sunday. The clinic is free and all rods and equipment will be supplied. For more information on the clinic and the Nelson Trout Club email Maree at maree@ellisauto. co.nz

Nelson gets ready for China Week Kate Russell

Nelsonians will have the opportunity to get a taste of Chinese culture this September, with China Week launching next Monday. China Week coincides with New Zealand's Chinese Language week, and offers an exciting line-up of activities and performances to celebrate and promote cross-cultural relationships and connectivity. As part of the launch, a celebration will take place on Monday night at the top of Trafalgar Street with Chinese song and dance, taniwha and fire performances. Other activities on offer include Chinese movies, business talks, a

photographic exhibition at the Hollow Tea Room on Customs in Chinese New Year, and a series of health talks from Mark Soper and John Black. Daily cultural activities will also take place between 1-2pm at the top of Trafalgar Street. Locals offered the chance to work at Camp USA

Nelson teenager Nick Davies had an American summer to remember and he’s encouraging others to give it a go. Nick is currently working at a Summer Camp in the USA for three months. His camp is called Camp Benson and is located in Mount Carroll, a rural town in Illinois, USA. The camp consists of 34 staff, 12 of which are counsellors, like Nick. His role at camp is a general counsellor and he’s responsible for looking after 13 kids, making sure they behave and getting them to their activities and meals on time. The motto at Camp Benson is “Make More Magic” and they encourage staff to be creative. Kitchen raids, late night campfires, spontaneous flashlight parties and cabin pranks are the norm. When his season at camp ends in September, he plans to do a road trip to New York City and then head off to a 14 day hike in a National Park that starts in Seattle and ends in Los Angeles. "It’s been a great trip," says Nick. “My advice to anyone thinking of doing summer camp is to just do it. It’s one of the best decisions of my life.” To find out more about working at a summer camp in the United States head along to a free info session event on Monday 7 September at 6pm. For more details visit www.iep.org.nz or email news@iep.org.nz or phone 0800 443 769.

Students get behind fence

A new partnership between The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary and Nelson College for Girls is underway, which will see a group of students take on a range of volunteer roles within the organisation. The scheme has been initiated and driven largely by head girl Raven Maeder, who has already helped to establish a volunteer programme at the school. Twelve girls in total have put their hand up to help and have been allocated key roles, which include social media development, graphic design, public events task force, photography and videography, and public events. Raven herself has taken on the

role of volunteer coordinator, and says the partnership is an amazing opportunity for both parties. “Volunteering is the most invaluable experience,” she says. “I’m really passionate about the environment and when we’re older it will be amazing to think we were part of this.” She also says the experience will give them valuable skills to take with them when they leave school, and they will receive a written reference from the sanctuary when they finish their roles. Raeonie Ellery, administration coordinator for The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary, says the scheme will give the sanc-

tuary a whole new perspective within a volunteer base that is mainly retired people. “I’m really excited – the girls have a great deal of skills we can utilise and it will give them experience in an expansive area.” “I have been blown away with their passion, and I’d love to think it will be a long term partnership,” she adds. “I’m so impressed with the girls – they are all talented and sophisticated young woman and it’s amazing they are taking time out of their busy school schedule.” The girls are officially on-board with their volunteer badges, with some having already begun their roles.

to Lyell, Reefton and Westport and by 1888 a Nelson to Blenheim passenger service. The business sold in 1919 but the brothers remained on the board. Eventually Tom’s son Jack (Sir Jack) took over.

Three top sporting tournaments are being played in Nelson this week as part of national secondary school tournament week. The New Zealand Secondary Schools Football Tournament is the most prestigious of those being played here. The tournament features the top football schools from around the country playing at Saxton Field. Nelson Bays Football general manager Clive Beaumont says the tournament is the premier school tournament in the country and it's held in Nelson every three years. There are two local schools competing, Nelson College and Waimea College. Nelson won both of its games on Monday, 3-0 and 2-0 respectively. Waimea narrowly lost its first game 3-2. "It's been a good start to the tournament and everyone's happy." At Saxton Stadium, the Junior Basketball Zone 4 tournament is being held and includes teams from all our local high schools. At various rugby grounds in the region, teams from around the South Island are competing in the Rural Livestock Rugby tournament. It features teams from Waimea College, Garin College, Motueka High School and Golden Bay High School.

Netball season down to semi-finals editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz It is now down to the “nitty gritty" part of the Nelson Netball season as teams prepare for semi-finals. All grades, including the elite grade, will play on Saturday at Saxton Stadium. In the Premier grade, Jacks OPD, Richmond Glass, Prices Pharmacy A and Stoke NBS looked to be top four contenders, however a serious challenge came from promoted Suburban Russell Curtains. Stoke did not cement their semi-final berth until after they had accounted for Prices Black last Thursday. While Suburban could be disappointed at missing a semi spot, they should consider their debut season in Premier to be a successful one. The top two seeds, Jacks OPD and Richmond Glass, will meet at 4:45pm with the winner going straight through to next week’s final, while the loser will meet the winner of Prices A and Stoke NBS who play at 3:30pm. Prices have bragging rights over Stoke as they have been the victors on both occasions by a six goal margin. Prices have the better record, winning the first 12 games of the competition, however they have stumbled in the last two games when they have gone down to Richmond and Jacks. Coach Mandy Whiting hopes to have a full roster on Saturday with only Christta Burrows in doubt with illness. Prices defensive end has been increased with the inclusion of Rebecca Watene from Prices Black. With the new 5.3 rule, players must

Although Prices have capable circle defenders in Sarah Steele, Dayna Whiting and Mahina Selby-Law, Rebecca can add another dimension. Prices were not happy with their performance against Richmond, when they were guilty of wrong options on attack and they did not capitalize on turnovers gained. However, they can take heart from their first half against Jacks last week. Coach Whiting believes their strength is as a unit and her charges will enter

the game on a positive note. Stoke NBS coach Abbie Cook is hoping her team can “put it out there on the day,” despite the fact that six of the roster will contest the Motueka Grade 1 final in the morning. Stoke have displayed “patches of form” with “patches of a team” in recent weeks due to player availability, injury and sickness. While Abbie admits her girls only squeaked into fourth place, she believes Prices are not unbeatable. The Thomson sisters, Megan and Jaunita, have had sterling seasons, with Megan anchoring the offensive end and returning impressive statistics while Jaunita has been handy at the other end of the court. While Richmond will be putting their best foot forward they are under no illusions that Jacks will be easy opposition without the services of Lisa and Aimee Book, who will be absent due to basketball commitments. They do have capable substitutes in Kim Starnes and Belinda Kolomatanga. Player/coach Kathleen Thornalley is aware of Jacks skilled mid court and their shooting combinations, however she does have faith in her experienced defenders to create the turnover ball. Richmond will be looking to focus on the basics and put their best game possible out on court, knowing that should they loose there is another opportunity to play the winner of Prices and Stoke. Jacks have a well-balanced line-up, with coach Robyn Leonard having the luxury of three accurate shooters in Rebecca James, Leanne Cook and Hannah Mead. There is speed to burn in the mid court and Jacks will begin the game as favourites.

TUESDAY 1 September 2015

Orienteering ready for Wily Weka Simon Bloomberg Hundreds of outdoor adventurers will be roaming the hills and streets around Richmond and Stoke this Sunday, searching high and low for an elusive Wily Weka. The Nelson Orienteering Club is holding its second Wily Weka Challenge rogaine which will feature teams of two to five people racing for either three or six hours to find controls that have been marked on a map. Controls are allocated points depending on their difficulty and the team with the most points wins - teams returning after the cut-off time lose points for every minute they are late. Race planner Gordon Sloane says there are 75 controls on this year's map and it's "highly unlikely" any teams will collect maximum points. However, Gordon says there's an added incentive this year with a prize for the first team in the three and six-hour race to find a photo of a Wily Weka that will be located at one of the controls. "I defy anyone to get all the

"The straight line distance between all the points is 56km and nobody's going to be able to average 10 kilometres an hour on the terrain. There will also be some curly ones and if you want to climb up high, you'll be able to. "But they all have a show of finding a photo of a Wily Weka. There will be one for each

race and they'll be at one of the trickier controls, so that's something to aim for." Gordon says the Wily Weka Challenge has so far attracted 85 teams and 230 competitors in either the three or six hour race. Entries have been kept open for the rest of the week but will not be taken on the day. Although Gordon says there are some "good operators" like Dan Busch and Dan Moore in the six-hour race, the event is suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities. "The three-hour race especially is aimed at families and less experienced people. That's what the three-hour is all about." Many of the teams that have entered the Wily Weka were out practising their map reading skills in the club's orienteering event held at Nelson College on Sunday. Brent Edwards won the orange course event ahead of Sally Lattimore, with Gilbert Robertson third. The Wily Weka starts at Saxton Pavilion at 9am this Sunday. Fishing with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Well, we are heading into spring, everyone's getting itchy snapper fever for the big reds to start turning up in the bay. It won't be long now at all until they start showing up out in the deeper water mid bay. Reflecting on the winter fishing further out, this has been another stunning season when the weather allowed it, which seen a lot of boats heading to the top of the D'urville Island area. There the fisho's have landed some very nice sized kingfish, snapper, trevally and grouper. It's a wicked fishery we have up there in the cooler months and it's great to see most of the boats that are regulars releasing a lot of fish to fight another day. The days are starting to warm, so if you're heading out for a fish and plan on taking some for the dinner table, make sure you have a chilly

bin with salt ice to make a slurry to chill that fish down straight away. It helps with the ease of filleting and keeps the flesh in pristine condition, also we iki spike our fish we are keeping. The Dawnbreakers fishing club have their open day coming up on the 20th of September at the Tasman Bay cruising club, 2-3pm, (the big red building down by the Nelson boat ramp) for the new club season starting in October. The Dawnbreakers club are not only a very family-focused fun club, but also cater for scuba divers and free divers, so anyone with an interest in diving/ spear fishing come along and chat to our members, as this is a great way to find new areas, techniques and, if you don't have a boat, the members can be great contacts to team up for trips out diving together.

Nelson College will be doing all they can to finish high in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Rankin Cup. The week long hockey nationals are being held in Auckland for 2015 and kicked off on August 31. The Nelson College team is coached by Scott Walbran with the assistance of Jamie Brown and the manager’s position filled by Alethea Stove. Although they are competing with an inexperienced team, having only five returning players, everyone is confident in the skills and talent of the team. All but four of the boys played in the Waimai United Div 2 men’s team that won the grade in club hockey - Matt Best earning the title of Most Improved and Devon Stove achieving Most Valuable Player for this team. The boys were also playing at the time of Mark Wilkens death and did the tribute. In the Nelson College teams initial pool they have last year’s finalist, Wairarapa College, Hutt International and Waiopehu College from Levin, all promising to be quality opponents. After this pool play the top two teams will go to Rankin Cup (div 1) and the bottom two teams will go to India Shield (div 2). The bottom six teams will be relegated to div 3 for 2016, a position Nelson College are fighting hard to stay out of.
